A sneak peek at next week’s TESOL Electronic Village Online: Web Presence II

Vance Stephens has asked me to co-host a six week mini-course on” Web Presence – Part II” (as this subject was also on last year’s agenda). My portion will be title “Building Web PresenceThrough Open Source, Web-based Portals“. The main goal of my session is to explore the possiblilities of using portals as personal web sites to host a variety of applications based on what the individual’s or group’s needs might be. A singular or group of teachers might envision one type of portal but a group of artists selling their wares, might find a need for another type of portal. My primary audience is intended to be those who are in “start-up” mode (don’t yet have the funding to hire someone else to do the work) and who already or soon will have available web server space, or perhaps a goup of teachers for whom funding is slim.

The class will be self-paced to the maximum extent possible with a sprinkling of sychronous events. I am asking those who participate in my session to be prepared to build some sort of Portal that reflects their personal needs. The class is very exploratory and constructive.

In the meantime, you can get a sneak peek at the course this weekend, at KnowPlace. I will be hosting a group to explore the broader concepts of Portals, Open Source and Web-based Applications. We will take a look at the portals that I have been working on for this class and discuss how such Portals might impact your particular learning environment. There will be no wrong efforts or answers and everyone will have a great time. Join me.
